Do you ever wonder, if people really change? I do! I believe people do change.
Change is slow...very slow...yet it is happening! I think pain, success, and love are the three culprits of drastic change in people. Pain, perhaps makes the person become more empathetic or bitter. Success, may make the person more at peace or more greedy.
Love, can make a person kinder or more possessive. T.S. Eliot in his poem (Cocktail Party) narrates change so beautifully:
...We die to each other daily.
What we know of other people
Is only our memory of the moments
During which we knew them.
And they had changed since then.
To pretend that they and we are the same
Is a useful convenient social convention
Which must sometimes be broken.
We must also remember
That at every meeting we are meeting a stranger
